Not what you're looking for? ! READ BELOW TO LEARN MORE ABOUT VAMs! Why Collect VAMs? Originally, rare and/or valuable coins were collected by date and type. As collecting progressed, condition became of concern along with, in time, mint marks. Once the dust had settled the attention then logically turned to rare or spectacular varieties within certain dates - often mistakenly referred to as "Error coins" - these are in fact variety coins. If you collect very early US coins you will quickly learn that die variety is as important in determining the value of a coin as condition is! In time, the same thing will happen with Morgan & Peace Dollars - indeed it already is an extremely rapidly growing segment of coin collecting! The VAM system of cataloging Morgan & Peace Dollar by die numbers is by far the most popular way of collecting Morgan & Peace Dollar varieties! But be warned - it is both enjoyable and highly addictive! Many VAMs have skyrocketed in value in the past few years while others are trading at the lowest prices they've ever been - in other words, get in now while prices are low before VAMs go totally mainstream and the deals are gone. I only stock the VAMs that I think are worth collecting and the vast majority of my coins are in PCGS slabs to take the guesswork out of VAM collecting. What are VAMs? As most coin collectors know, coins are created by dies stamping blanks - when that process goes wrong the result is called a mint error (off-center, struck twice, rotated reverse, strike thru, etc). Now if the mint worker tries to correct that issue but in the process of doing so somehow alters or damages the face of the die that strikes the coin- the coins that are struck as a result are known as die varieties. VAMs are the most popular way of cataloging these. There are many types of die varieties -- from doubling and irregular date or mintmark position to mishaps related to poor supervision by mint workers like die clashing and die breaks, and the efforts at the hands of those mint workers to try to remove those die breaks and die clashes through buffing, sanding and polishing. Sometimes the repair efforts were successful, often times the die were beyond repair or quickly failed again after the initialy repiar attempts producing dramatic die breaks circling the entire periphary of a coin. Other times a repiar would make things worse - such as a sanding file slipping, creating a sratch or gouge into the surface of the die resulting in a raised mark on the coin called a die scratch or die gouge. A die clash is when the dies strike together without a coin between them and the image from one side of the coin is stamped on the other side in varying degrees of clarity. Die breaks occur when a die was either overused or imporperly manufactured or installed resulting in cracks that eventually grow into die breaks that will in time kill the die forcing replacement. Doubling is created when the die is moved slightly (or sometimes not so slightly!) during the painstaking process of creating the die resulting in things like doubled lips and ears. Doubled dates are created when the engraver repunches a digit over a previous punch to correct position, etc. Some VAMs are unbelievably spectacular (like the "Donkey Tail" or "Hot Lips") - others are pretty boring (like a far date or a tilted mintmark)!
