Up for auction a Very Nice and rather Scarce CIRCA 1924 SHAKESPEARE NO.3102 "STEEL-KAIN" 4-1/2 FT., 3/2 SPLIT BAMBOO BAIT CASTING "TRUNK" ROD WITH DETACHABLE HANDLE AND ORIGINAL BAG. These very early bamboo "Trunk" rods from the Shakespeare Co. are quite scarce and this is only the second one I've come across. First offered in the early 1920's and last appearing in Shakespeare's 1924 catalog, these models were built entirely of split bamboo. The reference to "steel" in the name was only to suggest that the bamboo was as strong as steel. Also called "Suitcase" or "Gentlemen's" rods, they were what we would term "Pack" rods today. Carries a virtually complete spiral-ribbon rodshaft decal, one of the earliest used by Shakespeare, which reads "SHAKESPEARE STEEL-KAIN". These particular decals are extremely difficult to find complete. Reel seat is stamped simply "Made In U.S.A.". Comes equipped with file-proof steel guides, genuine agate tip tops, extra tip section, detachable handle, early sliding band reel seat, solid cork grip and wound in gold & green silk. T are 43 total individual wraps, with intermediates the length of each section. Rod is in about Fine condition for these, with one tip being down about 2-1/2". Bamboo is extra nice, with no splits, cracks or delamination whatsoever. The other three sections are the correct length, with all four being virtually straight. Varnish appears to be a newer overcoat and is in pristine condition. Wraps remain solid and complete. All guides, tip tops, ferrules and buttcap are in great shape. Reel seat works perfectly, showing little wear. The solid cork grip remains as nice as they come. Put up in the original sectioned cloth bag, which is in excellent condition, with no holes or tears whatsoever. A very nice example of these early "Trunk" rods from Shakespeare. To be sold with a very modest starting bid and NO RESERVE. Buyer to pay $9.00 shipping via U.S. Priority Mail. Insurance is optional. Payment must be received within 7 days of auction closure.
