AUCTION DESCRIPTION This is a wonderful pair of Galvano Bronze Clad Bookends that are so popular amongst collectors. This pair is one that you won't find in any bookend reference guide, but they are certainly authentic and original deco artifacts. This pair I have seen a number of times. They were created with a number of different finishes, from pale blue and pink polychrome varieties to simple white and natural bronze. I am particularly fond of this pair with the classic, dark bronze finish, which is just incredible. The set is in good condition overall with only minor wear due to age and use. T is a tiny, pin-size split in the clad metal near one foot on one piece, but this is unnoticeable and does not affect the appeal or stability. Surprisingly, one elephant bookend still has its original ivory tusks, which are usually the first items to be lost or damaged. The other, sadly, is missing its tusks, but I simply like to pretend that it's a male and female pair. These pieces feature two charging elephants that are caught in motion and held firmly to the bases by only two legs, while the other legs move the massive beasts across the terrain as fast as possible. The fact that the pieces are anchored by only two legs is astounding, and this is another reason why it's so hard to find such pairs fully intact. Both bookends are a good size, standing at 6" Tall, 6 ¼" Long, and 3 ¼" Wide from ear to ear, and they weigh 2 ¼ lbs each. This is one of the few remaining pairs from this renowned foundry. Galvano was one of only a handful of companies to employ the timely and costly electroformation method of production, making these beauties that much more collectible and desirable. Up for your consideration is an old pair of Male Motorcycle Rider Bookends. This is indeed a fine 20's/30's pair that depicts the quality, artistry, and craftsmanship of the deco era. These pieces are unmarked and will not be found in any of the available reference guides, but it could possibly be a Hirsch set based on the overall design and the materials used. These motorcyclists are fully figured and sit atop large marble bases that have beveled edges and areas of light brown and tan. They are made of a gray metal and have a nice, bright brass finish. Each biker tightly grips the handlebars of his antique ride, as he speeds along. Fully prepared for his excursion, he wears tall boots, a helmet and riding goggles. The set is in good condition overall. T are no breaks, cracks or repairs to mention. The brass finish has worn in areas to reveal the underlying gray metal, and in a few places, you can see a light, nicely aged patina. The marble bases are smooth and intact, with only a few minor nicks and one chip at the bottom corner on one piece. These motorcycle enthusiasts measure 5 ¼" Tall, 2 ¼" Wide, and 6 ¼" Long, and the pair weighs slightly over 8 lbs. Each piece partially retains its original green felt bottom and has an old screw and bolt holding the biker to the base. Take a look at the actual photos below to see what is being offered. These could be ideal for the Collector and Bookend Enthusiast.
