The notorious love affair that led tomurder Three original partial newspapers with features and photos related to the case of murderers Ruth Snyder and Judd Gray, as follows:
Utica Observer-Dispatch for May 13, 1927, front page only, with photo and headline "Chair for Mrs. Snyder and Gray." (Tears and chips to edges; loss to bottom half affecting about half of related article.) . New York Daily News for January 12, 1928, pp. 7 - 34, with an article on the impending execution (scheduled for the same night) and an editorial titled "Sympathy for the Governor," which begins with the statement "Gov. Smith refuses to interfere with the scheduled electricution of Ruth Brown Snyder and Henry Judd Gray...." (Light toning and a few tears>) New York Daily News for January 16, 1928, pp. 3 - 4, with photo and articles titled "'God's Will' Ruth Died, Says Mother," "Ruth's Death Cell Verse," and "Ruth Had No Hatred Toward State. (Light toning and a few tears>) A fascinating souvenir of the most sensational murder case to grip America since the Leopold-Loeb murder of 1924. In 1925, Snyder began an affair with a corset salesman named Judd Gray. Determined to be with Gray, she took out an insurance policy on her husband, Albert Snyder, and made various unsuccessful attempts to kill him. In desperation she enlisted Gray as her accomplice, and finally, on March 20, 1927 Gray and Ruth bludgeoned Albert Snyder to death after a dramatic struggle. Once their incompetent attempt to create the appearance of a break-in and robbery was unmasked, Ruth and Gray were arrested, tried, convicted, and sentenced to death. Snyder's execution earned a place in the annals of American crime not only because she was the first woman in New York to die in the electric chair, but also because an enterprising press photographer, Tom Howard, managed to capture her death on film with the aid of a camera strapped to his ankle. The grisly photo of Snyder's death throes, splashed across the front pages of newspapers worldwide, created an unprecented uproar.
