Thank You Gold Certificates When gold coinage became a significant medium of exchange, the government decided to hold aside quantities of it and issue paper notes redeemable by the Treasury Department. The first Gold Certificates for public circulation were released in 1882. The series lasted until the era of small size currency, ending in 1928. In 1933 all were ordered returned to the Treasury Department for redemption, including those in possession of collectors. A new law in 1964 permitted their ownership by collectors, though they can no longer be redeemed for gold. Gold Certificates are colorful and ivid and are among teh most attractive of all currency issues. Their reverses are a brilliant golden prange, symbolic of the gold coin they represent. Although there were nine emissions of gold certificates, only four of the issues were circulated to any extent, anmely the fourth, seventh, eighth, and ninth issue.
