WOW! Huge and HISTORIC lot of personal papers from an old prospector or miner and mining engineer. Almost all items date from the late 1920’s to early 1930’s and regard California, Tonopah Nevada, Nevada, Mojave Desert and other places in the Southwest. THESE ARE ORIGINAL ITEMS, some hand signed and hand written, one of a kind items, unique! YOU WILL NOT FIND THIS LOT AGAIN. Almost all items regard a man names Judge L O Ray (these were his property, so addressed mainly to him). Searching him on line I find a few mentions. Between the search and some brief scans of the items it seems to me that LO Ray was a very nice guy, lots of friends, who ran around trying to get rich on mining claims (I know so many people like this today – the MLM types, lol). One mention of him states: “…found rich silver ore in the mountains north of Tonopah… he filed for six claims in the area naming them the hornsilver, the ladysmith, the boomerang, the jenny belle, the Christmas gift and Teddy Roosevelt.” Goes on to say Ray was a mining engineer born in Iowa, he formed the Ray Mining Co. and other companies. T is also a website for a Beatty Museum & Historical Society in Beatty, Nevada that at one time had some mention of him, a photo caption I think. But this museum recently changed website addresses and not sure if it is still t? He also had something to do with the Bullfrog Mining District. A mention online states: “A Judge L. O. Ray, president of the Rhyolite Mining and Brokerage Company, who was then in town, accompanied the Indian back, along with a Henry Brown and a George Fairbanks, in return for one-fourth interest in the claims. [372] Within half a mile of Eddy's main discovery some earlier crude mine workings were found on the side of a canyon, consisting of implements, a shallow tunnel, and an old furnace or retort. "They called upon Indians who live in the neighborhood and inquired about the workings and the Indians remarked that they had 'Ketch urn some gold and some silver." Anyway, is what you get! OVER 60 letters, most all with envelopes. I have skimmed over a lot of these and read a few. But many have not even been removed from the envelopes by me! Date from around 1928 to 1931. Letters from lawyers, engineers, government agencies, banks, sheriff/assessor, Tungsten Corporation of America and more! About half a dozen of these are receipts for auto repair, another half dozen are private/personal letters. The rest all have to do with mining. Includes a letter from Comstock Triumph Mine Co dated 1929. Letter from Cinnabar King Mining Co Carson City Nevada 1930. ALSO, a few ore test results, assay reports, 3 or 4 telegrams ( WU ), a booklet of Mining Location Notices in triplicate Quartz and Placer (this has VERY HEAVY wear) most pages filled out as copies. Another booklet Notice of Location of Quartz… about a successful mine. A large, fold up map, USGS, of the Mojave Desert area. An Option agreement signed by Fred Remmick and L O Ray. Several receipts. Certificate of Location. Deed of Mining Claim (several BLANK forms of these). All together, getting close to 100 items or so (NOT COUNTING ENVELOPES or Multiple letter sheets!).
