Lindbergh has landed! Welcome back to a wonderful group of auctions of special Charles Lindbergh material!! As you browse the auctions, please visit our Guide To Collecting Charles Lindbergh Memorabilia . This lot is an original 1928 Charles Lindbergh Latin America Goodwill Tour cover from Havana, Cuba. It's one of a large group of Havana covers we're offering this evening. Havana was the last stop on Lindbergh's Latin America Goodwill tour before returning to St. Louis. Our offerings will include a wide variety of cachets including several of the rare "Island" cachet. Lindbergh arrived in Havana on February 8th and left on February 13th. This cover is signed by Pilot Edwin Musick, was sent from Havana, Cuba to Key West, Florida, and is postmarked February 8th, 1928. The cover has the famous "We" cachet with the Cuban C-2 Lindbergh stamp as a first day use and has a delivery backstamp in Key West on February 8th at 6:30 PM. The cover was opened at the backflap. Condition: AU. Listed in the American Air Mail Catalogue as L218. The pilot who signed the cover, Edwin Musick, was one of the most famous pilots of the era and was the chief pilot of Pan Am Airways Caribbean Division. Lindbergh left Port-au-Prince, Haiti at 6:35 AM on February 8th and entered Cuba's territorial airspace near the Guantanamo Naval Base and flew along the island using the central railroad as a guide. He landed about 4:00 PM at the airfield of the Columbian Military Camp w he was met by a delegation from the Pan American Conference. Before landing he circled the field twice as well as flying over Havana's Central Park. Lindbergh attended a party that evening in his honor at the North Terrace of the National Palace. During his stay in Havana, Lindbergh was given the keys to Havana by the mayor of Havana, attended a reception at the American Embassy, attended a parade in his honor, and attended several parties given in his honor by the leading citizens of Havana. On February 12th, the day before leaving for St. Louis, Lindbergh took President Machado on a ride over Havana harbor in a tri-engine aircraft owned by Pan-Am Airways that was used as a daily mail courier between Havana and Key West. Lindbergh's timing of his arrival in Havana was important as the Pan American Convention on Commercial Aviation had been finalized in Havana in early 1928 during the Sixth Pan-American Conference held in Havana, Cuba from January 16th through February 20th, 1928. President Calvin Coolidge arrived in Havana on the 15th of January and addressed the conference on the opening day. The US and twenty other countries from the western hemisp signed the convention on February 20th. The Havana Convention on Commercial Aviation applied exclusively to private aircraft and laid down basic principles and rule for aerial traffic, recognizing that every country had sovereignty over the airspace above its territory. The convention largely enabled US owned airlines to freely operate services within North and South America. Cuba issued a set of ten stamps to commemorate this conference, some of which appear on Lindbergh Goodwill Tour covers. During the Sixth Pan-American conference w commercial aviation was a prime topic, Lindbergh Week was held from February 8th thru 15th in Havana. Lindbergh arrived on the 8th of February, the same day that Cuba issued Scott C-2 to honor Lindbergh. It shows a Philadelphia Navy Yard PN-9 seaplane over Havana Harbor with a "Lindbergh/Febrero 1928" overprint in black. The stamp was issued solely in honor of Lindbergh as it never appears without the overprint. Following his solo transatlantic flight, Lindbergh visited many countries in the Spirit of St. Louis and had the national flags of each country painted on the fuselage. The Cuban flag was the last one as following the trip to Cuba, Lindbergh retired the Spirit of St. Louis and donated it to the Smithsonian Institution, w it is exhibited at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC.
