1929 $20 Genuine PCGS

Pricing & History
1929 $20 Genuine PCGS. The PCGS number ending in 92 suggests cleaning as the reason, or one of the reasons, that PCGS deemed this coin not gradable. In our opinion, this coin has the details of an Uncirculated specimen that has been lightly cleaned. The 1929 Saint-Gaudens double eagle is an issue that was produced in large numbers, but nearly all of the 1.8 million specimens minted were melted after 1933. The elusive nature of this date was recognized as early as the 1940s, when B. Max Mehl noted, "I unhesitatingly class the coin as extremely rare, far more so than is generally realized." The popularity of this issue has only increased since Mehl's time, and any auction appearance of the 1929 occasions spirited competition among Saint-Gaudens enthusiasts. The present coin displays razor-sharp striking details on all design elements, and the fields are remarkably free of contact marks. The surfaces are a rich greenish-gold color, and the noted cleaning has done little to dim the vibrant mint luster. In spite of its flaws, this coin remains an attractive representative of one of the scarcest dates of the Saint-Gaudens series.
