Sixty-eighth publication. Hardback, bound in the original cloth covered card with gilt titling to spine and front. 22 x 14cm. 81pp (advertisments), lxxxvi + 880pp [2]. Illustrated with 40 maps, most coloured and fold-out. About the Book A superb directory and gazetteer from the autumn of the British Empire. This extensive round-up of all the colonies and dependies under the rule of the British is a remarkable work. The book begins with 81 pages of adverts from bank note printing to Llandudno hotels. This is followed by 86 pages of the history and particulars of office and an account of the Imperial Conference, this has one large fold out map of the World showing the British Empire. The next 880 pages form the directory, which gives a brief history of the country and a description of its geography, trade, officials and facilities etc: Australia pp1-95 with coloured fold-out maps of Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia. Canada pp96-141 with three maps (Canda, Newfoundland and Labrador), New Zealand pp141-159, with one map. South Africa pp160-208, one map. Then it moves on to the smaller territories: Southern Rhodesia (1 map), Bahamas (1 map), Barbados (1 map), Bermuda, British Guiana (1 map), British Honduras (1 map), Ceylon (this map is missing, according to the map index), Cyprus (1 map), The Falkland Islands (1 map), Fiji (1 map), Gambia, Gibraltar, Gold Coast (1 map), Hong Kong (1 map), Jamaica (1 map), Kenya (1 map), Leeward Islands (2 maps), Dominica (1 map), Montserrat (1 map), Malta, Mauritius (1 map), Nigeria, North Rhodesia, Nyasaland, Palestine, St Helena, Seychelles (2 maps), Sierra Leone (1 map), Somaliland, Straits Settlements (Malay, Brunei, 1 map), Tanganyika, Trinidad and Tobago (2 maps), Uganda, Weihaiwei, Western Pacific (1 map), Winward Islands (2 maps), Zambia (2 small maps). Appendix: Iraq, North Borneo (1 map), Sarawak, TransJordan, Miscellaneous Possessions. This final section runs from pp517-880 and is the directory and who's who, listing officials, officers and their service etc. Condition A good copy of this very scarce book. It is ex-library but Institution rather than public library and the only marks are gilt titling to the spine "Council Reading Room" and an inoffensive stamp to the title page "India Office Library 30 May 1930". The rec cloth binding is gubby and bumped a little to the corners and the rear board has some bleaching of the red to the bottom edge. Internally, the pages are in good condition, with the binding secure apart from the rear hinge which is starting to crack. The maps are in very good condition, with most having a small tear where bound in. The map of Jamaica which is one of larger maps and has small areas of loss to the folds and has been folded back clumsily, and Sierra Leone which has a three inch tear where bound in. All other maps are present according to the map list, apart from Ceylon as mentioned above. A good copy of this scarce record.
