Coleman Instant Lite Model 4A Gas Irons were produced in Witchita, Kansas from 1930-1941. Prior that that time they were produced in Toronto, Canada. The Last Coleman Gas Iron produced in the United States was in 1948, but it was a Model 12. The Model 4A Operated on Coleman Fuel (a white gas blend) still available today. The Iron has a small (approx 1/2 pint) tnak on the rear of the Iron. After the tank was filled it was necessary to pressurize the Iron with the pump shown in photos 4 & 5. The screw on top of the tank has a small depression with a hole wherein the pump is placed and used to pressurize the fuel. (The Iron burns vapor not liquid). Photo 9 shows a small wire handle that rotates that is called the Generator. This is the needle valve that keeps the fuel line clean and releases vapor to the burning unit. It must be positioned properly for the Iron to operate. There is a black knob at the rear of the Iron (under the tank) which controls the flow of fuel to regulate temperature. There is a small "U" shaped opening visible in photos 2 and 4 under the top plate. That is where you put the match to ingnite the Iron. Most Model 4A Irons offered today have parts missing - usually the vented screw on the tank or the pump.
