1930 BING AND GRONDAHL CHRISTMAS PLATE The Yule Tree in the Town Hall Square of Copenhagen by H. Flugenring Harald Bing conceived the idea of the world's first Christmas Plate in 1895. He began by creating a Christmas greeting and gift of particular quality and beauty with a series of Danish sceneries and historic buildings that would appeal to collectors all over the world. The idea spread like wildfire and thousands of collectors revere these beautiful blue Christmas plates from Denmark. Many years ago, the wealthy people of Europe started a custom of giving to each of their servants a platter heaped with fruit, cookies, candies and nuts to bring a little cheer to their lives during the holiday season. The servants had very little and the platters were displayed in their homes with pride, calling them their "Christmas Plates". The tradition would create interest and rivalry amongst the wealthy to develop a new and more elaborate Christmas plate every year. The Bing and Grondahl Christmas Plates carry on this tradition, creating a new plate for collectors each year. This plate has a small crazing area of the top glaze just to the right of the church steeple on the very edge of the plate. The plate overall is in very good condition except for this one small spot. See picture.I have 51 years of B & G Christmas plates in my collection. read more
