Lovely ca. 1910-30 original oil (or perhaps gouache) on paper, by well listed early California artist, Louis W. Dessauer (1874-1943). Although there is a great deal of auction information available on the artist, his biography is rather sketchy. Askart lists his origin as "unknown", although I have found several California and Hawaii paintings done by him in the last century. He may have lived and painted in Hawaii as well, as Hawaiian scenes are a common theme of Dessauers. He must have lived in California as well, as verso there is an address label from Ross, CA (Marin County). I also found that there is an art endowment in his name at the College of Marin, CA which provides a scholarship to fine art students. Beyond that I lost his trail... Measuring an overall 24.5''h x 30.5''w, this piece is ready to hang. The artwork is in very good vintage condition with no apparent problems, losses, or repairs (see photos). It appears to be oil on paper as there is a lot of texture, but is possibly gouache. Signed lower right (see photos), and verso labeled and entitled ''Queen Liliukalani Falls, Honolulu,'' (see photos). The very old mat needs to be replaced as it has is soiled and discolored with age.
