This is an Antique R 1-9 Front Route Rollsign section with: C 8TH AVE CC 8TH AVE This sign came from the R 1-9 cars of the IND subway, which were built in many waves by a few different builders (American Car & Foundry, Pullman, and Pressed Steel - between 1930 and 1940. There were over 1800 built. The last of them were retired and scrapped in the 1970s. A few still exist as part of museum collections, including the New York City Transit Museum and the Shoreline Trolley Museum in East Haven, CT. Each car had two "signboxes" in each end of the car. Each signbox housed a full rollsign. The one on the left displayed the route, while the one on the right displayed the destination. The R9 in the photo shows the E 8TH AVE route. The IND's Concourse Subway was one of the original lines. The full subway began operation on July 1, 1933, and was served by the C Express and CC Local. This line is one of the two New York Subway Lines that serves Yankee Stadium. According to the 1937 IND subway map, The C Train was an express service from 205th Street to Hoyt/Schermerhorn Streets in Brooklyn. The CC was a local between 205th Street and Hudson Terminal in lower Manhattan. By 1948, the C was discontinued, while the CC was reduced to a rush-hour only service. This sign section read more
