offered is a very nice 1930's ronson art deco "sherlock holmes" pipe figural table petrol cigar striker lighter. the bronze or dark copper effect desk cigar lighter features a well cast pipe design on scrolled triangular mounting. the striker features a pull out wand with ronson's utility patent number as shown. this model striker torch ignitor was invented in 1933 by louis v aronson. LVA is considered the most important lighter inventor of the 20th century. while the wand is marked with patent number - the ronson base is unmarked as many early ronson table strikers came with a paper label on felt undercover which easily came off. the sherlock holmes pipe model is featured in the ronson book as figure 121. this item is 100% ronson art metal works. the lighter measures about 4-3/4" tall x 4-1/2" across and is in good used condition. the finish on pipe has oxidation causing discoloring which can possibly clean. the gun metal black base has some typical finish loss. the pull out striker wand is original and needs a new wick. a flint strip would also be required for actual use. the pipe striker should clean up to look better. this ronson figural pipe lighter is a rare fun novelty showy conversation item. overall - an important 1930's ronson striker lighter for your collection. the lighter looks better in person as photos have reflections. read more
