1930s Havana Cuba Sloppy Joe's Bar Hemingway old Photo A fantastic period photo from 1938 (dates on the back March 14 1938) showing Sloppy Joe's - the famous bar w Hemingway would hang out as a regular client- some also say it is even the actual setting for some of his novels. This snapshot shows a great corner view with the signs going vertically and horizontally - great period clothes and a car to the right - really highlights Havana's Habana's unique architecture and feel. A great memento or collectible for a Hemingway lover or someone interested in the history of Cuba or Havana or of bars. Sloppy Joe's was THE Havana bar in the 30's. It was a property of Jose Garcia, located in the central corner of Zulueta and Animas Streets. The bar received this name because the place in principle was a mess and the sandwich served t was made of "ropa vieja". The sandwich was known as Sloppy Joe and it was also served in many variants, in several parts of the world. He decided to open his own business and bought a grocery store along with a warehouse located in the corner of Zulueta and Animas Streets. Some friends in Havana used to pay a visit to Garcia at his business and seeing the terrible conditions of the place asked him why it was so careless.
