A 1930's vintage string quilt top. TOP only, it has not been quilted. The blocks are about 8" square and are machine pieced onto newspaper from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Dates I found on the newspaper include March 13, 1931, April 1, 1931, Monday June 25 193? and July 22, 1934. The top is 8 blocks wide by 10 blocks long, making it roughly 64" x 80".Readable newspaper stories include Fare For Fans with a story about the death of Knute Rockne, an article giving details of baseball pitcher Dazzy Vance's $3000 raise and another on the death of pilot J.R. Wendell. There are store ads, classified ads, society news and stock reports. I wonder what is on the back side of those newspaper squares! The fabrics are a mix of solids, floral prints, plaids, stripes, novelty prints and geometrics. One solid brown fabric is used in almost every block, either as a center "square" or a string. This brown fabric and several others are fairly thin fabrics. There are a few of the typical 1930's prints, and others which are shirting/garment fabrics. Most fabrics are used more than once, creating a wonderful cohesiveness to this scrappy quilt. This is a wonderful collection of vintage fabrics!Six of the blocks on one end row are not pieced onto newspaper, but onto printed paper. Flyers or magazines? You can see this in the photo of the back of the quilt.
