As a young adult he supported himself as a silent movie accompanist. From 1919 - 1923 he was head of the music dept. of the Conseratory of Geneva. He made his American debut in 1929 then spent 8 years as conductor of the Rochester Philharmonic in Rochester,New York. From the early 1940's onward he appeared in several MGM films.
