ORIG photo and news release showing the interior layout of the Transcontinental & Western Air DOUGLAS DC-2/DC-3. The very long news release describes the aircraft and notes that it will "result in a swing to air travel in 1934 which will be startling." 8 X 10 black and white in perfect condition. A LITTLE ABOUT THE DOUGLAS DC-3: The DOUGLAS DC-3 is one of the world's most famous airliners. It ws conceived when TWA found itself at the tail end of the line to acquire Boeing's Model 247. TWA's Jack Frye circulated a requirement for a new all-metal three-engine airliner capable of carrying 12 passengers. Donald Douglas's company responded immediately and convinced TWA technical adviser Charles Lindbergh that they could build a twin-engined aircraft that would meet TWA's specifications. A contract was signed less than two months after the requirement was circulated and the first Douglas DC-1 rolled out nine months later. It made its first flight 1 JUL 1933. The DC-1 never saw actual airline service but was used by TWA for promotional purposes, including a transcontinental record flight. The production aircraft was designated DC-2. The DC-2A, DC-2B, the WWII impressed civilian airliner C-32A, as well as the Navy and Air Corps R2D, C-33, C-34, C-38, C-39, C-41 and C-42 versions of the DC-2 saw service all over the world.American Airlines requested that Douglas produce an enlarged "sleeper" version of the DC-2 and that aircraft, the Douglas DST (Douglas Sleeper Transport) first flew in DEC 1935. The "Sleeper" became the twenty-four passenger DC-3, which, in all of it's many variations, has seen service all over the world for more than sevety years. More than 10,000 of them were built in the years between 1935 and 1945. The most famous of them the DC-3 and the USAAF C-47 Skytrain. AND A LITTLE ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPH ITSELF: I acquired this Douglas photograph from an author and USMC COL. Robert Rankin in the early seventies along with a few thousand others. He had acquired them from Douglas and the various air lines and had, I assume, planned on writing a book on the subject. Some of the photos bear some residue from having had news releases attached to them in the distant past. All black and white 8" X 10" and in perfect condition unless otherwise noted. 35.4% OF MY 2731 AUCTION SALES ARE TO REPEAT BUYERS!
