Up for auction is a very solid and attractive copy of the 1934 comprehensive look at the life and work of photographer Alfred Stieglitz, entitled AMERICA AND ALFRED STIEGLITZ: A Collective Portrait , edited by Waldo Frank, Lewis Mumford, Dorothy Norman, Paul Rosenfeld and Harold Rugg. Published by The Literary Guild in New York in 1934. FIRST EDITION. The volume includes a slew of Stieglitz photographs in the rear, and the following articles by the leading thinkers of the era: THE AMERICAN BACKGROUND, by William Carlos WilliamsTHE METROPOLITAN MILIEU, by Lewis MumfordTHE NEW WORLD IN STIEGLITZ, by Waldo FrankLIGHTHOUSES AND FOG, by Charles DemuthSTIEGLITZ, by Gertrude SteinALFRED STIEGLITZ AND A MACHINE, by Paul StrandTHE HILL, by Jean ToomerCITY PLOWMAN, by Sherwood Anderson and many more. Bound in attractive black pebbled cloth boards with silver title field on spine. Former owner's bookplate on inside front cover. Some rubbing to boards, but overall a solid attractive copy. In VERY GOOD condition overall. Blind embossed monogram of Stieglitz on front cover. An important collection of works by the leading thinkers of the 1930s discussing the way Stieglitz changed the nature of photography. Good luck!
