The year was 1934. America was firmly in the grip of the Great Depression and dolls were a great luxury. Still, nine year old Helen wanted a Shirley Temple doll more than anything in the world. Since her parents could not afford this extravagance, she took matters into her own capable and determined hands. Helen signed up to sell magazines and trudging through the hot Florida sun, she went door to door, sometimes making a sale, but most times not. Finally, she had the money she needed to acquire her heart's desire. She didn't play with her treasure much and when she did, she was very, very careful with her. Years rolled by, but Shirley stayed with Helen, always tenderly cared for. Helen is 79 years old now, and she has no heirs to pass her precious doll to. She would like to see someone get her that will give her a loving home. This Shirley Temple doll is one of the earliest. Made of composition, she is dressed in her red polka dot "Stand Up And Cheer" dress. All of her clothing is original and the complete outfit is there, including socks, shoes, slip and underwear. The clothing has yellowed down through the years, but Helen did not want to risk harming it with too harsh a detergent. Her face and body are in very good condition. Her teeth and eyelashes are intact. The hair is a little worn. This is more than a beloved doll. She is a repository of love.
