1937 HANDWRITTENDIARY ---------------------- This auction is for a 70 YEAR OLD antique diary / journal / manuscript -The woman who wrote the diary was LEONA MCMURTRIE .... Her home was in FRIENDSHIP ( JACKSON COUNTY ) OKLAHOMA. Leona was 20 years old when she started to write this diary. She lived at home with her mama (39 yrs old), and 4 younger siblings. I'm not sure what her father did to earn a living, but he lived away from the family in a "shack". She sometimes went to visit him, and at times he came home for short periods of time. Her mother would also go shopping with him, do his laundry, etc. This is such an interesting diary to read as Leona was quite an active gal. She helped cook & clean, did a lot of sewing for her younger sisters (many small fabric swatch samples are attached to pages when she writes of making dresses). She writes of going shopping, letters she wrote & received, working in the fields with her mother & siblings pulling in bales, quilting, the activities of her siblings, working at the store, radio shows they listened to, the men going wolf hunting, and so much more! Best of all, she writes about her love life .... she had a boyfriend, Garrett Marshall who lived in Electra. She writes of their letters, of his visits & their talks, their gifts to eachother, and more. And then t are the other guys that also ask her out .... and a marriage proposal from Raymond .... who's he? Does she accept? You're going to have to read the diary to find out! This is truly a wonderful one-of-a-kind diary! It has 365 handwritten entries,and nearly all of the entries are a full page in length.The diary measures 6" x 3 1/2" and it is in very good condition.Her handwriting is quite easy to read. Postman came before I got to write Garrett a letter. Girls did their ironing. Mama patched and I finished my bachlor quilt. About 1:10 our new John Deere tractor came and Garrett with it instead of papa! Was I ever surprised, my heart skipped about two bears. - The men unloaded the tractor and loaded the mares. Garrett gave me a box of candy. He has given me a box for the last four times! ..... Embroidered my & Garrett's initials on his linen handkerchief he sent over Thurs. I made & gave it to him on his 18th birthday ..... Went by Jacksons a minute to Papa's shack around twelve. Had fryed potatoes, ham, eggs, honey, butter and bread ..... Mama and I went to town, got groceries. Mr Lama (?) (w we buy groceries, he's a Jew) offered me a job. He has a crush on me, mama said ..... This p.m. mama told Lola about babies & things. She is 9 yrs, 2 mo. and 21 days old! ..... I got $1.51 groceries. We trade at Lama Gro. The old fat Jew asked me for a date to the show. I just laughed at him ..... Jewell and I cleaned out the harness room this morning and fixed it up for a bathroom. Rubey helped us, it is going to make a nice bathroom .... I helped mama with butter. My dog buster bit Lola, she really did throw a fit ..... George VI crowned King of England - Aunt Hellen and I talked all afternoon while Jewell & Rubey cut out Dionne pictures and King Edward pictures ..... Aunt Hellon took my picture on her house, came back to the house and listened to "Todays Children". We packed and started for home at 10 a.m. Had three flats but good roads. Home at 5:30 and had another flat. Had 7 flats all toll ..... Papa & George moved the school store up It is the "shack" now ...... We went back to Wichita for a parade. It was from 2 until 3 p.m. Sure was grand. Back to the Lake. Saw Earl and his friend Archy B. Mitchell. We came back with them. I laughed so much! Surely did have a time ....
