This is a vintage scrapbook documenting a 1937 trip to pre-war and pre statehood Hawaii. In 1937, Miss Dorothee Meyer left her home in Nebraska to embark on a memorable trip to pre-statehood Hawaii. Her trip started with a ride on the Union Pacific train The Challenger where she met the train stewardess Dorothy A. Spier, R.N. (see postcard and business card). She traveled to Los Angeles where she likely visited the 7 Seas as well as Jerry's Joynt in Chinatown. Then it was on to the S.S. Lurline departing July 10th, 1937, as evidenced by the passenger list, baggage tag, ticket, menus, and more. When she arrived at Waikiki, Honolulu, she probably ate at Lau Yee Chai, run by P.Y. Chong, Numba One China Cook, Allsame Big Bose, (see menu). On July 25th, she flew on Inter-Island Airways, Ltd from Honolulu to Hilo, returning the next day according to her ticket. From the business card, we assume her guide in Hilo was Henry K. Mehau. Also included is an Inter-Island map and air log. She returned by steamship to San Francisco. We have her immigration check form. The rest of the scrapbook contains souvenirs from San Francisco, Portland, Hood River, Seattle, Victoria B.C., and Vancouver Island. There is also a Great Northern Railway Route of the Empire Builder menu. In total, there are 26 pages relating to Hawaii, 18 to the rest. Several pages read more
