1938 D P S BU Jefferson Nickel Coin Set For sale is a 1938 DPS set of Jefferson nickel's struck at the Denver, Philadelphia, and the San Francisco mint's in a business strike finish. The coins may have some steps that merge together in places and incomplete in other areas. The obverse's are pretty decent with few of the check checkering that is usually seen on the Jefferson nickels as that area along with the hair by the ear usually don't strike up well with dies that have trash on the dies, or the planchets weren't prepared properly to fully strike up, or enough pressure that causes weak strikes. Photos are representative of the actual coins you'll receive for you to formulate your opinion of my coins. I like to use Bernard A. Nagengast's opinion as he wrote the first comprehensive book on the subject in "The Jefferson Nickel Analyst." Second Edition. Some finer points that make us scratch our head over the striking problems of the Jefferson nickels as found in Nagengast's book; "suffer from an inherent flaw in that the highest point on the obverse, Jefferson's hair above his ear was set exactly opposite the step area on the reverse! If the die pressure wasn't high the distance between the dies at the lowest point of travel and/or the planchet's were soft enough; the steps and/or hair at the ear would not be fully struck up." A fact I found a little disturbing when reading his book about the strike is as follows: " If the coin die was weakly impressed to begin with, the result would be an entire production run of "weak strikes" from that die. Even a new working die can have inherent weakness in design details that is dependent on the care with which it is made as well as the condition of the hub from which it is impressed. During most of the time span of Jefferson Nickel production, the standard practice was to use a master hub, produced from the original plaster designs, to impress master dies. The master dies were then used to impress working hubs, which were then used to impress the working dies actually used to strike the coins." "The master die produced in 1939 was so badly worn by the late 1960's that it had to be replaced!" Mint personal when cleaning the dies used oily rags and this collected dust and lint buildup in the dies that clogged the dies so that the metal could not flow into those deeper areas such as the hair and the step area which created a lot of the poor quality in nickels in given years like the 1950's up to the 1960's.Coin will be shipped out with the USPS First Class Mail with delivery confirmation for you to track its progress from my location to your location.
