Vintage radio collectors, tired of the usual uncertainty and that "roll of the dice" feeling caused by the all too frequent radio auction litany of "don't know about radios; I don't have an antenna, cord cut; no batteries; no tubes to test it; no headphones; no speaker; only grandpa used it; looks nice, will probably work; worked twenty years ago, still probably will "...Frustrated by low resolution photos that show you little or nothing of the item you are purchasing.... Wondering what evil lurks within the heart of that shiny cabinet ....... Afraid your radio purchase will be shipped in some nasty old box scavenged from the local supermarket.... No jitters, excuses or guessing Offered at auction is a vintage A/C operated, six tube desk or table radio, the Art Deco styled 1938 RCA Model 96T1. This set receives the AM (Broadcast) band from 540 kilocycles to 1720 kilocycles, which includes the now obsolete police band used in the early days of radio patrol cars. This radio is complete, clean and in good working condition. The hardwood veneer cabinet is in sound structural shape and retains its original finish. The veneer is tight with no evidence of delaminating or prior repairs. The original finish has been thoroughly cleaned of grime and dirt and then treated and polished with an antique "improver" specifically designed for an antique lacquer finish. T are some small nicks and marks to this seventy-year-old radio, but they are few and small and do not detract from its appearance. As shown in the unretouched photos, the set presents an exceptionally fine appearance and is ready for immediate display in your home or office. The cabinet was a premium set offered by RCA, with an unusual circular pillar-like constructions framing the dial. The original silk-screened glass "slide-rule" style dial is in excellent shape with no paint loss. The old obsolete Police frequencies are indicated on the dial. The dial is side - illuminated by a newly replaced miniature incandescent lamp. The radio retains its original Bakelite knobs. The grille cloth is also the original and is in exceptional condition. The original RCA decal is present under the Bakelite preset buttons and the model label with tube line-up is intact and affixed to the inside of the cabinet.The components and chassis, including the volume control, on-off switch and tuning capacitor have been carefully cleaned of dirt and dust, and all work both mechanically and electrically. The other electrical contacts and tube pin sockets have been treated with de-oxidizer cleaner. This set came with a premium feature, RCA's push button "Electrical Tuning" that enabled the owner to preset five favorite stations. This feature is completely functional and instructions as to how to set your favorite stations will be provided to the winner of the auction.All of old paper, foil and wax capacitors being replaced with modern "orange dip" film capacitors. The old multi-section tubular electrolytic capacitor has been electrically removed from the radio's circuitry and replaced under chassis with modern equivalents. The original electrolytic capacitor has been left on top of the chassis for display. The often-troublesome RCA "lozenge" or "coffin" mica caps have been replaced with modern equivalents.All of the old carbon composition resistors have been replaced with modern equivalents to maximize performance . Also the multi-tapped "Candohm" resistor been completely removed and replaced with modern power resistors of appropriate value and wattage, providing "crackle" free performance. The radio has been aligned to factory specs. New leads for the antenna and ground connections were installed. The original speaker has had a very small repair made to it and it performs, as it should, with a clear sound free from any rumble or other distortion. The original power cord and plug has been replaced. All crumbling rubber insulated wire has been replaced The tubes (included) for this superheterodyne set are the 6A8, 6K7, 6K6, 6...
