This is aspectacular 19 x 22 original pencil and ink drawing on heavy paper signed by renowned sports artist/ cartoonist Burris Jenkins dating circa 1940. This historic original art depicts the keen competition in the field of track running by mention of the most prominent races and runners of the day and the expectation of history being made with the onset of the 4 minute mile being run for the first time. The art is further enhanced with the detailed drawings of 6 vignettes on the topic. In perspective, Jenkins refers to some of the biggest races of the day including the Baxter mile and the New York Athletic Club sponsored Toussaint two mile event. These were some of the biggest races of the day taking place in Madison Square Garden with Jenkins highlighting the competition of histories foremost runners by name, including: Blaine Rideout, Paavo Nurmi, Glenn Cunningham, Chuck Fenske, Gene Venzke, Archie San Romani and Louis Zamperini. This is a remarkable field with each runner providing a chapter in the annals of track & field history including: Finish runner Paavo Nurmi, nicknamed the “Flying Finn,”, who dominated running in the early 20th century, settings 22 official world records and winning nine Gold and three silver medals in this 12 events at the Olympic Games.
