See Arlene Palmer; GLASS IN EARLY AMERICA SELECTIONS FROM THE HENRY FRANCIS DU PONT WINTERTHUR MUSEUM, Winterthur , Delaware , 1993, page 253, plate 218 for a similar bowl and discussion. The old Matron of the estate had gatd this glass jewel for herself not supposing it to be of interest to anyone else. She positioned it in her life upon her dining table in the dining room as a centerpiece for modest flower arrangements. She probably bought the bowl herself, for herself, from a mail order catalog just after WW II when she took over the homestead. Arlene quotes an original price of "$3.00". With this clear explanation of how thisâe¦ spectacular specimen of American free blown glassâe¦ came to this estate, this cataloger leaves that t and turns directly to the art merit of this singular piece of old glass. Arlene, in her discussion of a similar (and inferior) Clevenger bowl pictured in plate 218 in her book opens with a cat scratching "marked contrast to the vitality"âe¦ "nothing spontaneous or bold" slam that for the next three paragraphs continues by noting "color of the glass is believable for the nineteenth century"âe¦ "such details as the folded rim and pincered foot are accurately rendered" on to citing "the deep conical pontil mark so characteristic of Clevenger products"âe¦ to finally "their reproductions fooled collectors from the time of manufacture". Her annotation is supposed to be a pyramid of points to the pointed top point that a Clevenger production is poor and inferior to an original as demonstrated by the Winterthur collection. NOTE THATâe¦ that collection INCLUDES her pictured Clevenger bowl because Du Pont, the collector, bought it from the renown antique glass dealer Neil Gest and bothâe¦ thought it was real. What happens to Arlene's pyramid annotation is that one may turn it upside done and have it re-read as a reverse pyramid that starts point by rising pointS to reach a top that is a very flat and solid bases for why âe¦aâe¦ and THIS offeringâe¦ Clevenger Brother's bowlâe¦ is superb. This bowlâe¦ is superb. For the collector, the chance of finding a real 1840 periodâe¦ Lancaster Glass Works cornflower blue colorâe¦ free blown footed bowlâe¦ is not good. Paying for it will be worse. The quality of THIS bowl, up until the âe¦sensitive feel for old glassâe¦ of one's hand âe¦but including the bowl's weight and close inspection of the bowl by handlingâe¦, is truly âe¦damn fine good. It even has genuine pincered foot edge wear that is true wear. If a glass collector, you will not be disappointed AND one has Arlene's rock of authority tome backing the âe¦beautiful bowlâe¦up. IF one is new to this splendid glass bowl and this cataloger's c...
