Offered for your consideration are 10 assorted Holmes & Edwards serving pieces in the 1940 Youth pattern. Included are: 1 solid piece pie server 1 pie server (stainless blade) 1 master butter knife 1 sugar spoon 1 pickle/olive fork 1 large solid jelly server 1 solid piece gravy ladle 1 solid smooth casserole (non-standard bowl shape) 1 large solid cold meat serving fork (correct pattern) 1 large solid cold meat serving fork (reversed pattern)** ** Please read the following for some interesting information: This pattern was designed in 1940 to assist the new ("youth") silver owner in setting a balanced formal dining table. A multiple pattern price list* dated July 1, 1950, describes Youth as "The pattern of balanced place settings...the design of the pieces on each side of the plate flows symmetrically toward the center" (see picture of full page & close up of text). *Price list not included in auction and not available seperately - please don't ask! Take a fresh look at your own sets - all the forks are patterned to go on the left side (except for the cocktail forks) and the knives & spoons & everything else go on the right. I bring this up to call attention to the fact that all the pieces in this lot have the top set of lines "flowing" toward the left, with the bottom set toward the right, to be placed on the right side of the dinner plate. The sole exception is the second meat fork whose top lines flow toward the right, with the bottom set toward the left, to be placed on the left side of the plate. The entire pattern down to the smallest detail is a mirror image of the "correct" fork. Please see the seperate picture of the two forks side by side. A call to for an explanation was largely uninformative, but they did tell me that it might have been in production at a later time, and that the dye was probably accidentally reversed. They didn't have any information on the odd-shaped casserole spoon since all they have in their records is the more commonly seen rounded one. They also could not tell me how many pieces were possibly produced with the reversed dye, and an email to Syratech (the company who acquired the International Silver Company in 1986) yielded the same result - unfortunately they have no archives or historian. In preparation of this listing, I went through my own sets to make sure I wasn't putting my foot in my mouth describing the intended placement of certain pieces. In doing so, I found that I have a single group of 8 place spoons whose pattern is reversed also, so I'd love to hear of other reversed pieces that you may come across in your sets too :) Ok, end of lesson....thanks for reading, and happy bidding! Of course, more pictures & individual piece descriptions may be requested via email. The only pieces with anything worth noting are the 2 pie servers - the solid one has 3 ripples in the blade like it was used to pry something up, while the stainless blade has some black spots on the back of it - and the gravy ladle, which has a rough patch in the bowl (hard to see at certain angles - I almost missed it myself). I have not made any attempts to straighten out the solid blade, but it probably could be done professionally. Check out my other Youth pieces and save on shipping! Thanks so much for your interest and good luck! Please read all of the following for your protection and mine before placing a bid! ~*~*~POLICIES~*~*~ Now for the not-so-fine print: Please see my About Me page for more extensive information about me and my policies.
