Vintage 1940's Tavern Wax Ornaments in Original Box Welcome! Up for auction are 12 vintage extraordinary wax figural Christmas tree ornaments in their original box by the Socony-Vacuum Oil Company, Inc., otherwise known as Tavern circa early 1940's. Specifically designed and manufactured by the famous candle maker Franklin Gurley, the Tavern Novelty Candles first entered the marketplace in the early 1930's. The candles were originally commissioned by the Socony-Vacuum Oil Company (now known as Exxon Mobile) simply so that they could make use of the excess paraffin that was produced during the oil refinery process. Made by confectioner Franklin Gurley at his company W & F Manufacturing, they were originally marketed under the name Tavern Novelty Candles. Over time, Gurley's business went from paraffin confections such as wax lips and teeth during Halloween (I know, I know we can't remember these either!) to almost exclusively candle production. Eventually the Tavern Novelty Candles name was bought-out and changed to the Gurley Novelty Candle Company in 1949. The vintage set includes 3 Drum Majors, 3 Angels, 3 Snowmen and last but not least 3 Santa Claus hanging wax ornaments!
