Vintage 1940's Tavern Wax Ornaments in Original Box Welcome! Up for auction are 12 vintage extraordinary wax figural Christmas tree ornaments in their original box by the Socony-Vacuum Oil Company, Inc., otherwise known as Tavern circa early 1940's. Specifically designed and manufactured by the famous candle maker Franklin Gurley, the Tavern Novelty Candles first entered the marketplace in the early 1930's. The candles were originally commissioned by the Socony-Vacuum Oil Company (now known as Exxon Mobile) simply so that they could make use of the excess paraffin that was produced during the oil refinery process. Made by confectioner Franklin Gurley at his company W & F Manufacturing, they were originally marketed under the name Tavern Novelty Candles. Over time, Gurley's business went from paraffin confections such as wax lips and teeth during Halloween (I know, I know we can't remember these either!) to almost exclusively candle production. Eventually the Tavern Novelty Candles name was bought-out and changed to the Gurley Novelty Candle Company in 1949. The vintage set includes 3 Drum Majors, 3 Angels, 3 Snowmen and last but not least 3 Santa Claus hanging wax ornaments! The ornaments are hollow and lightweight for hanging purposes and all retain their built-in metal loops for easy hanging and decorating! The old vintage wire hangers are still attached! These precious decorations are all in very good vintage condition. Some age related wear from displaced glitter and handling, but the facial features and accent details are still visible on these wonderful vintage wax decorations! No dents, dings or melting! No fading! The original prop-up box for the one dozen Christmas tree ornaments is in very good vintage condition! Edge wear consistent with age. All flaps are intact! The box retains its original cardboard inserts! The outstanding colorful graphics on the box top and side panels have a wonderful warm aged patina. The decorative counter display box has one tear on the front by the flying horse 'Pegasus logo' synonymous to Mobile Oil (see photo). No tape or tape residue. No writing! A charming bit of nostalgia from Christmas' long since past! The ornaments measure: 3"H. The box measures: 11.5"L x 8.25"W x 1.5"H Please review all photos prior to bidding.
