PABLO PICASSO (1881-1973) AN ORIGINAL GOUACHE PAINTING OVER A LITHOGRAPH OF A HEAD (Untitled Ceramic Head Image) Circa 1940s GOUACHE SIGNE D: PICASSO Considered to be the greatest artist of the 20th century, PABLO PICASSO was born in SPAIN but spent most of his working life in FRANCE where he produced some of his most celebrated works. This is an ORIGINAL PAINTING, in yellow and blue WATER-BASED GOUACHE PAINT, over-painted onto a black and white lithograph of one of Picasso's well-known CERAMIC HEADS that he made during his time in the south of France during the War and immediate post-War years of the 1940s and early 1950s. It is really quite BEAUTIFUL, the vibrant colors of the paint contrasting superbly with both the dark and light tones of gray in the old litho itself. The lithographic element has a flat (matte) surface and appears to be from one of the prestigious EDITIONS VERVE series of lithographs published by Michel Teriade in France in the 1940s and early 50s. Several of the most important editions were devoted to the then new works of Pablo Picasso, many of those new works created exclusively and especially for Editions Verve (Monsieur Teriade was both a patron to, and a friend of, Picasso as well as to many other artists of that era: Leger, Chagall, Braque, etc.) This piece is considered UNIQUE because of the hand
