Western Electric Space Saver Telephone (43A) This original Western Electric 1940s die-cast metal 43A ( nicknamed "space saver") telephone has been restored and is fully functional on todays phone lines. It was used primarily in businesses or homes where counter space was limited. It could be mounted on the side of a desk or counter. This particular one has its original KS-5796 L1 backboard and 684-BA Bakelite ringer box which has a date of 1936 and is in wonderful condition with no cracks or chips etc. The metal housing, mounting bracket and finger wheel were sand blasted clean and then professionally powder coated with a new glossy black color. This phone looks much as it did when the Bell System first put it in service. The dial and switchook contacts have been cleaned and burnished. The bells ring loud and true on incoming calls. The sound quality on the F1 handset sounds wonderful. It has been thoroughly cleaned and tested inside and out. The #5 dial ( dated 2-47 ) has been lightly lubricated. It makes calls with the old time sound of a vintage rotary dial. This type of telephone required a ringer box in order for the phone to ring and work properly.
