Presented for your consideration is a 1941 PR-64 Washington Quarter. Only 15, 287 of these quarters were struck. The mint had produced proof coins for many years and were experienced in the technique. The director of the U.S. Mint was Nellie Tayloe Ross. When her husband, the Governor of Wyoming, died in office, Mrs. Ross became the first woman governor in the United States. She served out her husbands term and in 1933 President Roosevelt appointed her as the first woman director of the United States Mint. She was a stickler for quality and kept a close eye on all the Mint's coinage. When proof coins started regular production in 1936, she insisted the mint produce a beautiful coin which collectors would be proud to own. When the mint was ready to start producing proofs in 1942; the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941; forcing the United States to declare War on Japan and the Axis powers the very next day.While proof coins did eventually get produced in 1942, male employees were drafted and precious metals were needed during the war.
