You are looking at a 1942 HILLER COMET TETHER CAR, MIDGET RACE CAR, INDY RACE CAR. This OUTSTANDING "AS RACED" TETHER CAR is in ORIGINAL, COMPLETE CONDITION with BRILLIANT RED "BAKED ON" PAINT and ORIGINAL DECALS!! The car measures 18 inches in length and weighs 6 lbs 11 oz. It is POWERED by an IGNITION HILLER .60, SERIAL NUMBER 1454, DRIVING the REAR WHEELS THROUGH SPUR GEARS. This STREAMLINED TETHER RACE CAR of the PRE-WAR ERA is COMPLETE with SPARK PLUG, COIL, CONDENSER, BATTERY BOX, KILL SWITCH, BRIDLE ASSEMBLY, and FUEL TANK (located in the pan). The needle valve is broken off. As noted in Bob Ames' book VINTAGE MINIATURE RACING CARS the HILLER COMET was introduced in 1941 after three years of DESIGN, ENGINEERING, and TESTING.....and was a product of HILLER INDUSTRIES of San Francisco, a company run by Stanley Hiller, Jr., the famous helicopter pioneer! This effort was the FIRST of the MASS PRODUCED cars, a " COMPLETELY ASSEMBLED RACE CAR.....MANUFACTURED ON AN ASSEMBLY LINE". This racer shows evidence of being run with fuel residue in the pan and on the engine. The ORIGINAL PAINT exhibits slight scratching on the top, the ORIGINAL DECALS are INTACT!!
