1945 CHROME DOME Art Deco Sunbeam T-9 Toaster Deco Queen. This is a nice example of what many consider the classiest toaster of the 20th century, the Sunbeam T-9, manufactured by the Chicago Flexible Shaft Co. from 1939 to 1951. From its Bakelite base and heavy chrome cloaking to its half-moon ultra Streamline Art Moderne contours, topped off by that splendid "New York World's Fair" logo, this appliance looked fabulous on any counter and still does. No other toaster silhouette looks so cheerful in the morning when popping toast, yet so cool and sophisticated when dormant. The 1942 and 1945 patents on this particular toaster indicate it was made right after WWII; toaster production ceased during the last couple years of the war, and there was incredible postwar demand for new appliances. The Bakelite base and handles on this particular specimen are excellent, all in one piece with the lettering on the base below the controls crisp and legible. The chrome finish is unmarred by dents or pitting but the side with the light has a dull spot about 2 /2 across, most likely from too intense of a scrub. It does not show up in my photos but it is there. The old-style cloth-cover cord looks to be a silk-cotton blend made by Sunbeam, the red and yellow silk highlights are very distinct, and the cord is clean, long and flexible but the very end that goes into the toaster is frayed. No wires are exposed and I had full confidence in using it. The plug is in very good condition. When I tested the toaster, both sides of both toaster slots heated up rapidly. The jewel light glows orange and has some rust around it, the only rust on the entire toaster and it is very minimal. The "Light-Dark" control on one end is intact, as is the other end's knob designed to let you choose "Toast Pops Up" or, a distinctive Sunbeam option, "Keeps Toast Warm.
