This is the History of CONAD - - a story of supply in the field - - and it is dedicated to the soldiers who , on two foreign continents and in four foreign countries have made the history recorded in these pages. The official purpose of this document is two-fold. First, to preserve the history of one of the most travelled of the United States Army supply forces ; and second, to provide a basis for future study and the planning of logistics. But to those of you who personally lived this life and made these achievements possible, it is intended to be something more. It is a means of refreshing your memories of the man's share you have contributed to the defeat of the once mighty Wehrmacht ; and, if you can forget your sometimes hazardous, often unglamorous sweating labors, to cause you to think for a while of your personal associations, and your personal efforts to bring about your share of the results achieved. The book is narrative in form. An effort has been made to tell you not only what you did but how much, not only w you went but your means of transportation and the problems involved. It is written from historical notes kept on the trek from Africa , w we started, to Central Europe w we finished, from facts and figures furnished by all the CONAD Staff Sections and others, and from the results of research by members of the Historical Staff. It is not the work of one man but of many over a period of time, and acknowledgement is by made, and deep appreciation expressed, for the generous contribution of work, photographs and guidance furnished by the many whose efforts helped to make this book possible.
