1945 Life Hot Rod SCTA dry lakes 32 Ford flathead Muroc

is a original 1945 issue of Life magazine. It has 144 pages and measures 10.5" by 14". It has a great article with photos inside titled "Hot Rods". The lead reads "Teen-age drivers in their hopped-up jalopies speed at 100 mph across a California desert". It mentions the Pacific Coast Timing Association racing at El Mirage. The story goes into detail about the popular southern California hot rod craze and how the owners modify their "hot iron", "hop-up" or "gow-job" as they're referred to in the article. I have at least 9-10 different national publications such as Life, Collier's, Popular Mechanics, etc. from the late 1930's to right after the war (before Hot Rod Magazine came out in 1948) and this is the earliest mention I've seen in print of the term "hot rod". The other terms listed in this article (particularly "gow-job") seem to have been the choice before the war.
T's also a great full page picture "Ye Old Hot Rod Shoppe" showing a couple of young guys in a garage working on a '32 roadster one inherited from his "soldier-brother" the previous year. He has since "rebuilt the engine twice, installed five different transmissions, three clutches, four carburetors and a dozen cylinder head gaskets". The magazine is in overall nice original condition with no serious age wear to note. This is great reading that makes for a very interesting look at the early days of hot rodding and dry lakes racing.
