This is the original Hummel figurine named "Signs of Spring" which has the date 1948 stamped right on the bottom by the Goebel Factory in West Germany. The little country girl is standing behind a fence looking at a bird who has come to herald the arrival of Spring. At the bottom of the fence are 2 clumps of flowers that have popped up, as well. If you look closely, you will see that the lass has but one shoe on and is, on the other, barefooted. This little darling is, of course, the work of the famous artist MI Hummel whose signature adorns the back of the pedestal on which the figure stands. The piece is in mint condition with no nicks, cracks, chips or other defects. She stands 4 inches high and is 3 inches wide. Hummel is beginning to put out commemorative pieces on their very old favorites. This one is retired so she is of significantly more value than the ones they are still manufacturing. At this time, I only know that the "Star Gazer" which I am also selling in another auction, is being duplicated as a commerative work in 2007. But Hummels are coming back and collecting is getting hotter. SO WOULDN"T YOU WANT TO OWN THE REAL THING AND NOT A COPY? 'S YOUR CHANCE TO HAVE AN ORIGINAL RETIRED HUMMEL. I am putting a minumum bid of $50.00 on this item, but it is worth over $200.00. For your information: T is so much confusion between what is a Hummel and a Goebel. A Goebel is any item made by a company in West Germany by the name of Goebel founded in 1871 by F.W. Goegel. All Hummels are Goebels, but very few Goebels are Hummels. Hummel was an artist whose work Goebel copied in 3-D form and put her signature, M I Hummel, on each figurine. Hummel is NOT a factory or a company, it is an artist named MI Hummel who died in 1946. The original "MI Hummel" signature is on this piece right under the telescope base. Happy Bidding and Collecting!
