This medal is listed in Hibler & Kappen's reference book, "So-Called Dollars", and was assigned the catalog number HK-499. It has a rarity index of R-4, which means only 201-500 pieces are known to exist ! ! ! This lustrous, near-gem quality, so-called dollar has been certified and graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation, and was awarded the mint state grade of MS-63. This medal was issued to commemorate the dedication of New York International Airport, commonly called, "Idlewild Airport", in New York City, on July 31, 1948. The airport was renamed, "John F. Kennedy International Airport" in 1963, following the assassination of President Kennedy. This so-called dollar is 34mm in diameter, and the composition is Gilt (a type of gold leaf).
