1949 Notre Dame NATIONAL CHAMP. Football This is a OOAK 1949 Notre Dame National Championship football used in the game against USC and most likely carried by the Heisman winner Leon Hart. His signature is easily readable as are Gus Cifelli at the bottom of the same row as Hart, and just above Hart is Emil Sitko. The entire team appears to have signed the ball as t are so many signatures that I cannot read them or count them all. This ball's provenance is traceable all the way back to Notre Dame's ownership. It was presented to Major General Wainright and before his death, was given to our consigner's father. General Wainright surrendered to the Japanese on May 6, 1942. At that time, he was the highest ranking POW in history, and his treatment for three years was anything but pleasant. General Wainright gave the football to Odell Trueblood's father, Harrod Trueblood, who was his closest POW in the Japanese jails. After he retired to San Antonio, our consigner, Odell Trueblood's mother worked in the Wainright household on Elizabeth Rd. in Terrill Hills until her death. Odell received the ball from his father; the last picture is a notarized statement before his death. The condition of this football is fair and t are parts of the leather that have flaked off and have cracked. A lot of the signatures are not clearly readable. We have tried to use different lighting sources to capture as many as possible. As stated above however, some of them including the 1949 Heisman winner, Leon Hart, are clearly t For any NOTRE DAME collector or militaria collector, this is definitely 'The Cat's Meow.' You can probably imagine the private viewings over drinks and the remarkable HISTORY...now, imagine your friends and families' faces if you were the owner of this ball...WOW WOW WOW! We are starting this auction at $500 and hope that the eBay community will value this gem of American sports history as much as Mr. Trueblood.Several authenticators of sports memorabillia were contacted; most attempted to purchase the ball which tells us, 'everything is RIGHT' with this artifact. Most of the items sold by PinkAntiques are vintage or antique and were obtained in auctions in England or estate sales in Texas. I normally will not clean or repair anything I sell - I leave that up to the buyers. Although I have spent many years in antiques, I am not an expert in everything.
