Please read listings in full, thank you This auction is for a lovely time piece from the famed American BENRUS watch company that was founded in 1921. They were the first company to develop a fully water proof watch and also made the classic ‘Dick Tracey’ models which are hugely collectible today. This example is from 1950 and is a top 15 Jewel ETA 900 AXZ movement in a superb Tonneau shaped rose gold tone casing with exquisitely styled Hooded lugs. Please read on. The Case The case shows wonderful and stylish Hooded lugs that have a very Art Deco feel to them – a very similar 14K gold Benrus model appears in the exclusive ‘Complete Price Guide to Watches’ (see page 676) but does not have the beautiful ornate decoration to the lugs. Please note that this looks very much like gold but I can’t find a hallmark at present so I can’t confirm it – certainly other similar models I have seen have been 14K gold as typical of the American style at the time. But this may well be just an excellent gold plate finish. The casing also shows a very subtle ‘stepped’ effect at the sides which enhances depth and shows lovely quality and attention to detail. Please also note the subtle CURVEX style to the body and crystal – again, a good sign of quality engineering. It shows the serial number 971390 on the back. The Dial The dial shows Arabic numbers and has a subsidiary dial that mirrors the beautiful shape of the rest of the watch. Measurements It’s a mid sized piece as was typical of the times and measures: 28mms across including the crown 36mms top to bottom 5mms deep Movement The movement is stamped for BENRUS MODEL BB3 AXZ 15 JEWELS and underneath the balance wheel it says J80 900 which refers to the ETA 900 that was employed by Benrus for this model. It is excellent health and keeping very good time. Although I expect this to continue it is always advisable to regularly service vintage time pieces and responsible ownership of this kind will be well worth it to protect your investment. Cosmetic Condition Cosmetically, there are a couple of condition issues to consider. As you can see from the photos, the Benrus signature is no longer present on the dial – it has been rubbed perhaps or superseded by its patina and this may well be a point for restoration if thought necessary – however, I do feel that the exquisite elegance and style of the item as a whole wins through at the end of the day and makes this less of a major issue – this will no doubt come down to personal preference in the end. Otherwise it looks superb – some light age commensurate wear but nothing of particular note. Most importantly, please study the photos and make your own assessment prior to bidding. Strap It comes on a BRAND NEW TOP quality Genuine Royal Lizard brown 16mm strap which looks fantastic with the watch and retails for over £30. In short – a wonderful quality time piece – perfectly period and not something you’ll find in the shops these days, and certainly not at this starting price! Don’t miss out.
