Rubbing to all parts of binding, discolouration and fading to boards, slight loss to cloth of sunned spine. Some browning to fixed endpapers, red pencil marks and ink stamp to rear pastedown, previous owners label (R. L. Schonceit) to ffep, otherwise internally clean. Inscribed in ink by, Nobel Prize winning author, John Steinbeck to recto of front free endpaper: ´For Reneé and Jan with so many thanks for so many things, John and Elaine Steinbeck´ with a simple line illustration of a bird beneath. Steinbeck married Elaine Scott in December of 1950, this work is dedicated to her, [To, for, and because of Elaine] making the inscription all the more appropriate. From the library of American poet and playwright, Harry Tierney [Son of musical theatre composer, Harry Austin Tierney]. With his inscription: ´Harry Tierney, February 1990, Palma de Mallorca, Spain´ over ink stamp of ´The Secondhand Book Market Santa Ponsa [Mallorca]´. A fascinating provenance to this unique item.
