This wonderful mint couple belonged to my grandmother in the 1950 to 1956 time frame. I remember them sitting on her bookcase when I was a child. They are beautiful and I pulled info off the internet to give some background on these highly sought after pieces of ceramics. In the 40's and 50's lots of aspiring Southern California potters like Florence Ward of Pasadena were making ceramic novelties in their homes. Mrs. Ward's talent for modeling and painting figurines with fine detail soon compared them with Royal Doulton's premium wares. in 1942 she set up her own company. "The Florence Collection" now had a huge following and the Western Hemisp waited for each semi-annual issue of another historical couple in authentic period dress. I believe this couple to probably be in Godey's French Victorian dress as the female has "Matilda"incised on the bottom. Real lace was dipped in ceramic slip and applied, then burned away to leave a delicate fringe. Handpainting was glazed in two separate firings, three for 22K gold trimmed pieces like this pair. While modern collectors often amass any and all Florence pieces, the most popular are still the figures marked with one of the firm's two circular marks.
