A New Jersey Zinc Company publication entitled "Franklin - Sterling: A Story of Men at Work" This is a circa 1950's magazine-format publication which describes and illustrates the operation of the NJ Zinc company in Sussex County, New Jersey - the Franklin Mine at Franklin, and the Sussex Hill Mine at Ogdensburg. The ore from these mines (zincite, willemite, and franklinite) was shipped by rail to the company's eastern smelter at Palmerton, Carbon County, Pennsylvania. The book contains well over 150 photographs of NJZ workers, machinery, facilities, etc, organized by department: Franklin mine Franklin mill Sterling mine Sterling mill Power and shops division Surveying division Engineering and testing division Supply division Forestry division Geological division Real estate division Chemical division Personnel division Accounting division Franklin hospital The duties of each department are described, along with photos (usually 4 to 6 per page) of employees at work. T are several pages of photos of underground work at the two mines, everything from drilling holes and filling with explosives to placing timbers and scraping out ore. T are photos following the ore from the mine, through the milling process, to the railroad loading facility.
