1951 Singer Model 301Slant-Needle Machine Serial Number NA285222 My husband and I are moving to smaller quarters and we have to downsize our collections a little bit to get everything in. We have been together for almost 30 years and both of us are enthusiastic collectors of anything old and beautiful, so you can imagine that we have quite a few things to sell. We love to collect vintage Singer sewing machines. My husband does the cleaning and tuning and repairing of our treasures when we bring them home, and he keeps a large stock of parts on hand to do so. He has a lot more machines and parts and attachments and accessories than we will have room for in our new home, so most will be appearing here on eBay. Introduced in 1951, the 301 was Singer’s first modern, “slant-needle” sewing machine. The slanted sewing head makes it a lot easier to see your work, and the 301’s strong internal motor and gear drive makes it an excellent choice for “all-day” sewing projects and quilting. By the way, Singer Models 301 and 301A are exactly the same. Singer called all of them “301” at first, then added the “A” later to acknowledge the town of Anderson, South Carolina, where they were manufactured. Jeff did not clean this machine but he did take the top, bottom, and side covers off to check the shafts and gears. He lubricated everything properly before putting it back together, and you will be able to take it right out of the box and begin sewing. We have included lots of photographs so you can see what you’re getting. There are some scratches and paint chips, as you can see in these photos, and some places where the clear coat has dulled and crackled a bit, but overall this machine has a nice shine and is in very good condition. The 301 is only a little bit larger than Singer’s legendary Featherweight 221. Its metal case is made from aluminum to reduce weight, just like the 221, and it has a carrying handle on top to make it easy to move around. The 301 has a larger, more powerful sewing motor than the 221, and this one is very fast! In one the following photos you can see the sewing motor at bottom right, tucked inside the aluminum case. This machine is gear-driven (no belt), and the gears and shafts are in excellent condition. If you are looking for a strong-running machine for quilting or everyday sewing, here’s one that is ready to go to work. In the photo above you can see that the rubber bed cushions (feet) are worn and should be replaced. The original Bakelite foot controller is in nice shape. The most important feature of any sewing machine is how well it sews, and this one does an excellent job. I have adjusted the upper tension and bobbin case tension (see following two photos) to balance them for a perfect stitch. You only need to unwrap your new machine when it arrives at your home and begin sewing! We will send along an original 301 instruction booklet to help you learn how to use and care for this fine machine.
