1953 AUTOGRAPHED TOLEDO SOX Baseball Program-LUIS MARQUEZ Gene Conley 6 SigsDescription :1953 American Association baseball program for a game between the Toledo Sox and the Columbus Redbirds.The Toledo Sox were newly named, as a new AAA affiliate of the Milwaukee Braves in 1953. The Sox won the International League pennant that year with a 90-64 record, but lost the championship playoff to the Kansas City Blues.The team had previously been called the Toledo Mud Hens dating the the 19th century and were a White Sox affiliate the previous year. After three years as the Toledo Sox, the franchise joined the International Association and were again named the Toledo Mud Hens.The program is signed in pencil by six members of the Toledo Sox: Signed on the cover by Luis Marquez and Dewey Williams, and on the back cover by Jack Cerin, George Estock, Gene Conley, (a future Milwaukee Braves baseball pitcher as well as Boston Celtic NBA star) and Russ Kerns. Estock and Conley are pictured inside the program. Conley was spectacular, leading the league in wins, (23) complete games, (24) ERA, (2.90), shutouts (4), and strikeouts (211). He was named the Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year and was also named MVP of the International League.Marquez is a unique and scarce signature.
