PLEASE ALLOW TIME FOR PHOTOS TO LOAD (Note: The watch does show reflections) c1953 Mens Hamilton "TOWNSEND" Vintage 19j Watch Here we have a beautiful, original gents Hamilton watch dating back to circa 1953. This watch is in very nice original condition throughout and is still keeping good time on the high grade 19j movement. H amilton liked to name their watch models which has consequently meant that they are now very collectable. This model is known as 'Townsend'. It is best noted for its distinctive Tanq style and it's solid sterling silver dial with solid 18k gold markers . It comes complete with leather band. The original Hamilton signed tanq style case is rectangular with bevelled sides which step out and up from the corners. The ends of the case have a rounded finish on top and hold the solid lugs which are angled. The whole piece is a rich 10k gold fill and in excellent condition with just light rub to the tips. The inside and out of the back is fully signed by Hamilton including the Townsend model name inside. The case measures approx 38mm x 24mm. The original Solid sterling silver Hamilton signed dial is again in good condition. It is a pearled white finish with a light vintage hue. It has a set of raised Solid 18k Gold batons, diamond studs and pyramid style studs at the hour positions. At the 6 position is a cross hair style, sub second dial. It has a couple of tiny specks. The crystal is lucite and in excellent condition. The watch is still running on its original, Hamilton signed mechanical movement. It is a 753 calibre which is a 19j model. It is fully working and keeping good time. It comes complete with leather band. HAMILTON WATCH COMPANY The Hamilton Watch Company it thought by many to be the producer of the best American watches and was founded in 1892 by Charles D. Rood and Henry J. Cain who set the company up in Lancaster PA. The company was named after Andrew Hamilton a Scottish born immigrant who was Pennsylvania 's attorney general from 1729 to 1739. Hamilton's first pocket watch, was designed in 1893. The railroads turned to Hamilton to put an end to railroad crashes. Most of the pocket watches were sold to railroad workers because of there accuracy and dependency but Hamilton could see a greater potential and went on to produce fine watches for a world wide customer base. In WW1 General Black Jack Pershing used a Hamilton watch to time movements of American troops. Hamilton 's golden era was from the 1920s to the 1950s. In 1920 only 4% of the company's watches were wristwatches compared with 48% from Elgin . This means that many Hamiltons wristwatches are now quite rare and coupled with the quality of their pieces, these watches are much sought after by collectors today.
