Winston S. Churchill "The Second World War" in six volumes Chartwell Edition 1954 Educational Book Co., LondonGenerally considered the best of the Deluxe Editions of this work, this edition included WSM's final revisions and was also fully (and newly) illustrated. 6 volumes, large octavo, in the original quarter blue morocco on blue linen boards, titles gilt to spine, marbled endpapers, with purplish-blue top stain. There is a color painting as a frontispiece to each, 185 half-tone plates, many maps, diagrams, tables, etc., many of them folding items. The Chartwell Edition is more common in the standard red canvas; this is the deluxe binding of "moderate blue" quarter morocco; its original cost in the mid-fifties was £21 by subscription, compared to the standard red binding at £12 9s 6d. (Cohen A240.7.a.) This set looks ex-library but there are no stamps or markings anywhere in or on these volumes, no bookplates or name; in fact interior of each volume is clean, very nice throughout, and all folding maps and facsimile documents are perfect. The binding on each volume is sound. The quality of paper for this subscribed edition is superb for the photo and map reproduction, and has not yellowed. If one has only seen the Houghton-Mifflin American set or Cassell British sets of standard size, the Large Octavo format makes such a better presentation for the illustrations. Except for the spines' color loss where tags must have been removed (the next panel from bottom), the only other sign of library usage is that the front marbled endpapers have had pockets removed; this was done carefully (possibly steamed) and is barely discernible except in two of the volumes where a bit of the marbling pattern is lifted (photo shows the most noticeable example). All the front covers are still bright blue linen. The clear / glassine covers we’ve added are shown in two pictures, and both of these show the bottom edge decking, which has slight soiling near fore-edge. The most obvious wear on the set is the edge-wear / color loss on the leather as shown, heaviest at the top of spine and less so at bottom; this appears to some degree on most surviving sets in the blue morocco. The top-stain on this set looks to have lightened or faded slightly. We hope these photos illustrate these points, but if you have further questions please write. As these were issued new without dust jackets, each volume has been given a clear protective sleeve cover (removed for most of these photos).BE SURE AND SEE OUR OTHER LISTINGS THIS WEEK FOR MORE CHURCHILL ITEMS...
