You are bidding on a 1954 Columbia 5 Star Superb Bicycle. This is an original, the real deal, and not a reproduction. This is a men's frame in blue with cream accents and chrome trim. Everything on this bike works, and it is in very good condition for its age. The head light is original and fully functioning, as is the horn and rear tail light built into the rack. I have the original key for the springer fork lock which also works. This bike is mostly original with only a few basic parts being replaced. The stem, handle bar, tires, tubes, rim strip, and chain are not original. The chain guard is correct but has a Jet Rider decal on it, which was a 24 inch Columbia model. The only paint replaced is left side of the tank, and new decals are included for the entire bike. The very rare head badge on this bike reads "Niagara", as it packaged by Columbia as a 5 Star Superb in Westfield, Massachusetts for the retailer. I am including a new Columbia head badge for this bike if you would like to switch it. The down tube of this bike reads Five Star Superb and the seat tube and tank both read Columbia Built.
This 5 Star is gorgeous, cosmetically not perfect of course, but is completely functional, very ridable if you choose to do so, offers a very smooth ride, a coaster brake works great, and makes a great museum piece. The springer fork and springs on the original leather Mesinger saddle are also quite nice. I've taken it out once or twice for a short ride, one occasion was with Floyd Landis himself riding this very bike at a wedding. The seat has a couple of scratches on the edge but is otherwise in great shape, not torn apart, rotting or dried out. It is stamped Mesinger and is made of a smooth, brown leather. The headlight is a working original in nice condition overall, and I've seen those sell for $300 alone. The paint is in fair condition with the chain guard being the poorest, but it is original paint. I ad to the philosophy that a bike can be original once, but restored countless times, and attempt to clean up a bike changing as little as possible without doing any damage. Mechanically, I did put new ball bearings in the original Columbia retaining ring, and repacked it with new grease. The headset and both hubs were left alone and required no work. New D batteries will be required for the horn and both lights (2 per device).
I am very, very, very reluctant to sell this bike, and do so only for the space it occupies and the required income. I have been heavily involved in the cycling industry for over 15 years, but have never seen another 5 Star this nice. Please contact me ahead of closing bid to arrange a pick up or shipping details. This piece of historic art is quite sizable and weighs about 70 lbs, so shipping will be quite expensive. If you want to pick up the bike, I will meet you for a fee depending on the circumstances, and would need either cash, a money order, or a certified cashiers check for the balance due. The reproductions out of the 80s were green and sold for about $1000. Get one of the real deals, one of the rarest and most desired collector bikes ever made!
If you've got any questions, please ask! Included but not shown: kickstand cap, new Columbia decal kit, new Columbia head badge. If an arrangement is made before the auction is scheduled to end, I am willing to end the auction early to speed things up. Just drop me a line. Serious inquiries only, please.
