This is a program from the 4/15/54 Opening Day baseball game between the Milwaukee Braves and the St. Louis Cardinals at County Stadium. Hank Aaron, number 3 on the all-time MLB leaderboard for career hits with 3771, records his 1st Major League hit! (Aaron trails only Pete Rose and Ty Cobb.) Aaron laces a 1st inning double off Vic Raschi and scores his first ML run later in the game. Aaron would go on to score 2174 runs in his career, tied with Babe Ruth for 4th place all-time and trailing only Rickey Henderson, Ty Cobb and Barry Bonds. Warren Spahn wins career game #146/363, Eddie Mathews walks 4 times, Red Schoendienst goes 1-5 and Stan Musial goes 1-3, however, none of them realize they had just witnessed history--- Hammering Hank's first career hit. Aaron is widely recognized as the true home run king with 744 career homers and is arguably the greatest player in the history of Major League baseball. What isn't as well know is Aaron's role in the desegregation of baseball---and America. Aaron played in the Negro Leagues prior to joining the Braves and was one of the first black players in the deep south when he played in the minors in Jacksonville, Florida in 1953. He was 1 of 5 players to integrate the Southern Atlantic League that year. His experiences were similar to those of Jackie Robinson when he integrated MLB in 1947. read more
