You are bidding on a 1955 DOUBLE DIE, the most famous of all hub doubled cents and the one that all young collectors dreamed about owning. Technically, this is a rotated hub doubling. This is the most impressive form of hub doubling and displays the widest spread doubles dies in US coinage. The 1955, 1972, and 1969-S are the three best known examples. The cause was the failure to mate the hub and die exactly for the second impression. The second impression was made on top of the first, which already had made a significant penetration into the face of the die, so the second impression went even deeper and was in higher relief on the coin. This is the method used to determine first and second impressions and how to describe the spread, either clockwise or counterclockwise to the stronger or second image. To prevent this problem, the Mint added lugs to the hub which fitted into matching slots in the face of the die blanks, but by 1972 the lugs were being ground off, paving the way for more than a dozen dies to be made and used at all three mints that had rotated hub doubling. The first die discovered had the widest spread. The subsequent dies fell in value drastically. Values depend largely on the grade and the amount of spread between images-the larger the spead the higher the value. This coin has a great spread and is from DIE 1.It has MS60 details. A print is visible on the obverse and perhaps a previous owner thought he could remove it by cleaning it. Unfortunately this has been the fate of many fine coppers. This coin is a great example of this classic and would make a fine addition to your collection. Insurance is included in shipping. Scratches are on the slab.
