Please allow time for the many large photos to load Rare Gents 23j LORD ELGIN Self-Winding (Automatic) Watch Here we have a very handsome mens Elgin Automatic watch in very good, original condition which dates to circa 1950-1955. It is fully working and keeping time on the high grade movement and comes complete with band. The watch is signed by Elgin on the case, dial and movement. This watch is best noted for its wonderful two tone textured and mirrored pie pan dial and its high calibre 654 grade (A Schild 1584) 23j Automatic movement. The original Elgin signed case is rounded with a nice angle to the bezel all the way round which reflects the light beautifully. The lugs have a long sweep inwards on the sides before curving around to the point. The bezel is 10k rolled gold and the back is stainless. It shows only light wear if any at all. The back also gives information on the watch such as "Self Winding - Waterproof - Resistant to Shock, Dust and Magnetism" (we would not advise testing vintage watches for these claims). It is also signed by Elgin and Durapower. The case measures approximately 38mm x 31mm inc lugs. The original LORD ELGIN signed piepan style dial is also in very good original condition and is a two toned model. The centre of the dial is white and has a textured fine ring or ripple pattern radiating from the middle with a very light age tone. The outer edge is deep set with a luminous dot at each hour. Above this it has a raised silver section which is double bevelled giving it the pie pan style and this has the gold minute and hour markers. It has gold dauphine pitched hands and a red arrow headed central sweep second hand. It is signed 'Lord Elgin' below the 12 and 'Swiss' at the very bottom. The domed lucite crystal is in very good condition. The Elgin signed movement is also original. It is a rare 654 grade 23 Jewel automatic. This is produced for Elgin by one of the best movement manufactures, A Schild. This is believed to be an AS 1584 Calibre. It is fully working and keeping good time. The watch comes complete with a genuine leather band. It is not often you come across an original early Lord Elgin automatic in this condition so good luck with your bid. Vintage watches make superb gifts for all occasions including Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries and weddings. They are rarely seen today so are always something special to give and receive. With care they will last for many more generations to come and only gain in value. Elgin Watch Company Elgin was founded in 1864, right as the American civil war was coming to an end. The first watch Elgin made, an 18 sized B W Raymond railroad grade watch, was finished in 1867 and over the next 100 years, they went on to produce about 60 million watches. Elgin produced their first wristwatch in 1910, leading most other American watch companies by many years. Along with Bulova, Hamilton and Gruen, Elgin went on to make some superb watches and in my opinion some of the best ever seen, especially through 1920-1960 with the Lord and Lady Elgin models being the flagship. They carried on manufacturing quality collectable pieces right through to the 1970's up to the dawn of the “cheap throw away battery type watch” which killed the market in these gorgeous watches and forced many original watch making factories to close.
